The City
Palace complex is the most important landmark with its numerous buildings,
courtyards impressive gateways and temples. Occuping one-seventh of the
walled city area - The Palace houses the seven storeyed Chandra Mahal,
Mubarak Mahal, the Diwan-i-Aam and Diwan-i-Khas. The Museum in City Palace was founded in 1959 as Maharaja of Jaipur Museum. There are
Three sections in the Museum.
(i) Textile & Costumes : The most amazing object is the 6ft long and 4 ft wide cloak of Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I. The finest example of Sanganeri print, tie & dye, lehariya, pashmina shawls, mishru are displayed here. (ii) Art Gallery : The rich collection of Indian miniature paintings, 16th century herat, Kabul & Lahore carpets, paper cuttings, hand written manuscripts, 19th century photographs & photographic equipments, items of paraphernalia and regalis are displayed in the Sabha Niwas of the City Palace, now called Art Gallery. (iii) Sileh Khana (Armoury Section) : One of the richest collection of the Indian weapons in the world is displayed in the most artistic & symbolic manner. The most important object displayed here are Heavy Khanda, (sword) of Raja Man Singh I, personal swords of emperor Shahjahan & Jahangir, Jahangir's Archer's ring; Akbar's helmet, night polo ball used by emperor Akbar & Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh's pistol. The museum also has two silver jars (Gangajali) the largest silver objects in the world, as per entry in the Guinness Book of World Records, made in City Palace in 1896 weighing 345 Kg. |
