Postal Rates 
It costs Rs 8 to airmail a postcard and Rs 7.50 to send an aerogram anywhere in the world from India. A standard airmail letter (up to 20 gm.) costs Rs. 15. Post Office-issued envelopes cost Rs. 3 within India. The larger post offices have a speed post service. International rates are Rs. 200 for the first 200 gm. and Rs. 60 for every additional 200 gm. Internal rates are Rs. 20 for places within 500 Km. and Rs. 30 for places beyond 500 Km.


Posting Parcels
Most people discover how to do this the hard way, in
which case it will take half a day. Go about it as described below and it should take up to an hour:
- Take the parcel to a tailor and ask for your parcel to be stitched up in cheap linen.
- At the post office, ask for the necessary customs
declaration forms. Fill them in and glue one to the
parcel. The other will be stitched onto it. Specify that
the contents are a 'gift'.
- If you specify over Rs. 1000, your parcel will not be
accepted without a bank clearance certificate, which is a hassle to get.
- Have the parcel weighed and franked at the parcel
counter.
