Neurology / Psychiatry

Two new insulin sensitising agents belonging to the class of thiazolidinediones--Rosiglitazone & Pioglitazone were introduced. The insulin sensitisation occurs mainly through an improvement in insulin stimulated glucose disposal rates in peripheral tissues. They are approved as monotherapy in type II diabetes or in combination with sulphonylurea, metformin or insulin. Orlistat is a new antiobesity agent which acts by preventing the absorption of about 30% of dietary fat from the gut. It is a inhibitor of gastric and pancreatic lipase.

Doxercalciferol, the first synthetic vitamin D prohormone was introduced for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism in chronic dialysis patients. A fast acting insulin secretagogue--neteglinide, a rapid-acting insulin analogue--insulin aspart and a recombinant human insulin product were introduced for the first time.
