Aids In the ongoing fight against AIDS, two new compounds were launched last year. The nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI)- abacavir sulfate is the first NRTI to be useful in combination with other nucleoside analogues, raising the possibility of triple nucleoside therapy. Amprenavir is the latest protease inhibitor, administered twice a day, and has fewer food restrictions. However, amprenavir is limited by the large number of pills that have to be consumed in a day. Abacavir is tarnished by a relatively high incidence (almost 20%) of hypersensitivity. |
