Study in Australia

Entry Requirements :
For admission to a course of study in Australia, you need to have a good standard of English language and academic quallifications for the intended course. Students who plan to study English need a level of English language proficiency.

English language requirements :
If you come from a non-English speaking background and you plan to undertake a university or TAFE course, you will need to provide a score from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Information on IELTS is available through any IDP office, or on the web at www.ielts.org. You should take your exam before applying to an institution.

The Australian academic year generally runs from February to December and applications for many courses close in October. University and foundation studies programmes often have a mid-year intake as well. English language courses are flexible and starting dates are frequent, often monthly.

Academic qualifications :
Academic entry qualifications are determined by the individual institutions. In assessing your academic standing, the institution will look at both the level and content of the courses you have completed. It is essential that students provide a certified transcript of studies taken, including results.

Undergraduate university courses are generally considered to be the overseas equivalent of Australian high school matriculation. Pre-requisites are important for certain courses. An alternative entry path to under graduate courses is to successfully complete a Foundation Studies programme.

Post-graduate university courses require a good first degree. Some professionally oriented post-graduate courses require a score from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

TAFE ( Technical and Further Education) institutions require the overseas equivalent of Australian high school education. Students with the equivalent of year 10 or 11 can enter certificate and some advanced certificate course and those with the equivalent of year 12 can enter a diploma course. TAFE also accepts mature age students who have relevant work experience and personal history.

Primary and secondary schools assess an international student’s qualifications on an individual basis. Generally, students who achieve good results in their home country have a good chance of admission.
