Location : 
Ajmer nestles in a bowl in the Aravallis at a height of 1600 ft, in the historical state of Rajasthan. To the north of Mayo is the Madar hill, on the west, the historic Taragarh Fort and in the east, further ranges of hills. Ajmer is conveniently linked with Delhi and Bombay by rail, the nearest airport is in Jaipur, just 133 kms. away.

The aim is excellence in academics, extra curricular activities, games, sports and character building by providing an all round liberal education.

  

The Pupils :
Mayo offers the students a unique opportunity to develop both the mind and the body through various activities. Being primarily a boarding school, with a handful of day scholars, the campus is self sufficient and has the facilities and opportunities for each student to excel in some sphere or the other.
 

Affiliation :
The College prepares boys for Secondary School Certificate Exam (Class X) and Senior Secondary School Certificate Exam (Class XII), conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi. The medium of instruction is English, but the College lays a strong emphasis on Hindi.
     

Campus : 
The College campus sprawls over nearly 300 acres. The splendid and imposing Main building of white marble stands out in the middle of the estate. Spread over the estate are the boarding houses, the old mess-cum-auditorium, the new mess, the college temple, the houses of the staff, the new guest house, the blocks of class rooms, science laboratories, museum, art school, workshops, the college farm, library, junior school and numerous subsidiary buildings. The grounds include 20 playing fields including a turf wicket for cricket,hockey,football and other games, 20 tennis courts,5 squash courts,a well equipped gym, 2 basketball courts and 2 volleyball courts. There are 2 swimming pools on the campus,the smaller one being for the beginners.
 

The college is divided into three sections – Junior,Middle and Senior. There is also the Junior School under the supervision of a headmaster and staff which has its own building, auditorium, modern dinning hall with sophisticated appliances and gadgets, a swimming pool, separate games fields etc. and three boarding houses – Prithviraj, Ajaypal and Durgadas.

Background :
Mayo College was founded in 1875 to ensure to the sons of the aristocracy of India, a liberal and enlightened education. It is called the ETON OF THE EAST. Though vast changes in all spheres have taken place to keep pace with changing times, the `essence' of Mayo has never changed.
The credit for originating the idea of Mayo College must be given to Colonel Walter who in his Bharatpur Agency Report of May 28,1869 suggested the opinion of such an esteemed institution in order to ensure to the sons of the aristocracy of this country a liberal and enlightened education. 
 

The Main Building Architecture : 
Several designs were submitted in Grecian, Indo-Saracenic and Kolhapur styles by different engineers. The viceroy finally adopted Major Mant's Indo-Saracenic design in June 1875. The construction began in 1877 and was completed in 1885 at a cost of Rs. 3.28 lakhs.
Major Mant's design became a classic symbol of Indo-Saracenic architecture and apart from being quoted in architectural courses even today, the design now lies in the archives of the British Museum in London
 
Organisation :
The school is managed by the Board of Governors and run by the Principal, assisted by his academic and administrative staff. There is a house master who is the pastoral head of each house and is assisted by the assistant house masters, house tutors and matrons in the more detailed supervision of individual pupil. The Junior Section of the school has a separate staff and a headmaster so as to be able to concentrate more on the needs of the young ones.
 

Sports :
The grounds include 20 playing fields for cricket, hockey, football and other games; 20 tennis courts, 5 squash courts, a well equipped gym, 2 basket ball courts and 2 volley ball courts. There are two swimming pools on the campus, the smaller one being for the beginners.
 
Extra Curricular Activities :
There is a wide range of hobbies and work experience projects to choose from: Agriculture, Book Craft, Commercial Art, Electronics, Leather Work, Metal Work, Music, Photography, Poultry, Sculpture, Typing, Woodwork, Clay Modelling, Stone and Wood Carving, Library for Science, Automobile Engineering and Computer Science.
 
Fees :
Fees cover tuition, board and lodging, stationery, washing, mending, bedding (except blankets and quilts), hair cutting, ordinary medicines and games facilities.
 

Admission :
An Entrance Test for admission to Mayo College is held in the last week of November every year at various centres in India. It can also be arranged overseas through the Indian Embassy in that country. The test comprises English, Hindi and Mathematics to test the age specified skills in language and Mathematics. Parents are notified in the month of January about the results. Only the students who are eligible as per their previous class of study and who are registered for admission are allowed to take this test. The Entrance test is held for admission up to Class 9. For entrance to Class 11 admission is considered on the basis of Board's result of Class 10. Admission is subject to merit and vacancy, and rarely does a student with less than 75% gets admitted. The merit list is drawn on the basis of the marks obtained in the written tests, and only those who qualify are asked to appear for an interview in the months of February and March. The new entrants join in the month of April. Overseas candidates may come for the interview after informing the School of their availability for the interview if they are unable to come on the date specified. Their wards can join the School in July of the year of entry.
 
Results / Exams :
A continuous assessment of a boy's academic performance is determined by his performance in unit tests and class tests. At the end of each term, full reports are sent to the parents / guardians. For promotion, the boy's work throughout the year as well as his performance in the terminal exams is taken into account. The Senior School has classes from 7 to 12 and the Junior School has classes from 4 to 6. The boys take the Class X examination at the age of fifteen and the Class XII at the age of seventeen. The academic year is from April to March. It is divided into two terms: a. Autumn term: from the middle of July to early December. b. Spring term: from the middle of January to the end of April/ beginning of May. In the middle of the first term, the School organizes a large number of educational trips, camps, sightseeing tours, treks, expeditions etc.
 

Scholarships :
a) Mayo awards a number of scholarships of the total value of Rs. 1,50,000 every year. They are mainly for excellence in academics and sports and for boys who score 75% or over in both terminal exams. The financial status of the parents is also taken into consideration.

How to get there :

Ajmer is conveniently linked with Delhi (NH No. 8 passes through the city) and Ahmadabad by rail. The nearest airport is in Jaipur- 133 kms. away. The Shatabdi Express plies from Delhi to Ajmer and returns on all days except Sundays.
 
Alumni :
The Old Boy's Society's main office is located in the School. Old Boys of the School are invited to become members and to keep in touch with the School and other Old Boys through the Society. All boys, when they leave Mayo College for good, join the Mayo College Old Boy's Society. Only members of O.B.S. may wear the special tie obtainable from O.B.S. `s office. The current life membership subscription is Rs. 500/-.
