Study in Germany

Studying in Germany :
The German academic year consists of two semesters, commencing in the months of April and October. To start your studies in Germany, you can go there as :-
1) a first-year student and complete the entire course of study in Germany.
2) a student continuing higher studies at another place living in Germany.
3) a graduate who is taking a post-graduate course or a doctoral course.
It is important to note that the comparatively higher standards of study in Germany sometimes might involve a downgrading of your academic achievements.

Requirements :
There is no general study course entrance exam in Germany except for artistic courses. Nevertheless, you must fulfill certain education and language requirements in order to be eligible for a course.
Selection criteria (e.g., previous academic achievements, age, and knowledge of German language) might vary according to the respective programmes. Detailed information in this regard can be obtained from the DAAD New Delhi office. Nonetheless, it is always advisable to obtain a basic knowledge of German in India beforehand. On the one hand, it will prove your interest in German education, at the same time, it will help you to make friends soon, settle down faster and find your way around much easier.

Financing :
Interestingly, there are no study fees in Germany. There is only a small semester fee, which all students have to pay at the beginning of each semester. Yet, considerable costs arise during a stay in Germany. These expenses include :

1) living expenses (at least 1,000 DM - 12,000 DM per month for food and accommodation)
2) health insurance, accident and personal liability insurance costs.
3) social expenses.
4) books and other materials.
The Deutsches Studentwerk offers a variety of service packages, helping you make your stay in Germany more affordable.

Application for admission :
The application form and additional information on where and when to apply can be obtained from the German diplomatic mission or the DAAD, New Delhi office.
Apart from DAAD there are numerous other German institutions which provide support for foreign members for admissions to the institutions of higher studies.
